6.

“Wait. Are you scared, ma?” asks Paxton.

Not much I can say to deny that. The kid can read emotions. Sure, I’ve got a little supernatural power… but I am no demigod. We are not Inca. We do not worship that bird. It might be offended by our presence here and wanting to purge the heretics, so to speak.

Demigods are not all created equal, Sam. Talos pauses in thought. Unfortunately, without us getting into a direct confrontation with that creature, I cannot guess at its power level.

Theoretically, it could destroy us all without breaking a sweat?

That remains a possibility. It is also possible it’s merely an overgrown pheasant you could slay with ease. Well, perhaps not ‘ease.’

Yeah. Not going to roll those dice. Besides, we’re the invaders here. It wouldn’t feel right to kill them unless we get cornered and I have no other option. No matter how wrong it might be, if I’m forced to choose between killing these bird people or watching them hurt my family and friend, there will be some fried chicken.

“We need to get out of the air,” yells Allison. “That big bird controls the wind. It’s gaining on us. Can’t hide if we’re up here.”

“Big bird?” Paxton laughs. “Great. Guess what I’m going to have nightmares about now…”

“Nightmare on Sesame Street?” asks Tammy.

Of course, now I am picturing the giant yellow bird wearing that ugly green and red sweater.

How did my life get so damn strange?

Anyway, this is a new twist. I’m not caught up in some manner of paranormal oddity because someone else is in danger and I need to save them. This is the mother of wrong turns on vacation. Talos is awesome, but he’s no demigod. Allie’s right... we are not going to out fly a god of birds.

“There!” Paxton points. “Mom, look. There’s a big cave.”

I scan the ground up ahead. It’s mostly flat open desert. Those weird tall mesa things are nowhere to be seen here. Wonder if the bird people made them the same way humans construct skyscrapers? They look like the result of elemental earth magic making stone rise out of the ground—nothing that would have naturally occurred. This place has no trees, no rocks, no place whatsoever to take cover. If I wasn’t running for my life right now, I’d be wondering what the heck those bird people eat. Wonder if this place has worms the size of snakes.

A scary distance out in front of us, a dark spot on the ground offers some hope. Paxton called it a cave but it looks more like a sinkhole. It’s the only available hiding place anywhere in fifteen miles—or however far Talos’ eyes let me see.

Even weirder, it feels as though the hole is staring back at me. How Nietzche.

Come, whispers a voice at the back of my mind. It’s raspy, vaguely feminine, and ethereal. Seek shelter. You will be safe from the wretched avians in here.

Okay. Talk about a conundrum. I’m stuck between a giant bird and a huge hole in the ground that’s inviting me in.
